RTL Training: Beau's Rob's Ride and Strawberry Fields Forever : What a great weekend! Saturday morning we got our new 36" geared unicycle working with lots of help from Corbin and Ken. Then a 5 hour long mostly-offroad ride we'd been wanting to try for a year: Beau's Rob's Ride (regular Rob's Ride with a lap down Sick & Twisted to Route 9 and up U-Conn). The trails in this area started out for us as Muni rides (1998-2001), then progressed to Coker Muni rides in 2002. Now they are geared uni rides. Will wonders never cease?

Then Sunday, a 100km organized bike tour: Strawberry Fields Forever with 16 unicyclists (3 did the shorter 25 mile option). This was a great training event for Ride The Lobster because we had 13 members of 8 teams riding the event.

Teams represented: Centurions, Flirt, Smile, Texacali, Totally Doable, Venus, Yam Power and Yellow Line Fever.

Ride The Lobster Practice with 4 Teams 12/29/2007 : 3 2/3 teams met in San Francisco, California on Dec 29, 2007 to test out riding in the style of Ride The Lobster. This is a relay race with each team consisting of 3 racers and a support person. Racers can trade off any time after any distance. One team (Totally Doable) was trying racing with a geared up 36" cycle which has an effective wheel size of 54". This made them impossible to beat - all 3 members used this unicycle and were able to ride at up to and above 20mph, but had to use regular 36" cycles for the uphill sections.

Team Totally Doable finished in approx 6:10 with Team Yellow Line Fever finishing about 5 minutes later. Team Venus was not far behind and Team Yam Power! straggled in a couple hours later - they had a hard time with one of their racers off in China. Jim rode pretty much all of her share and ended up using this day as day 1 of his qualifying ride. Read his epic tale!

We learned a lot - mainly I learned that the actual race in Nova Scotia in June 2008 is going to be a blast!

On April 28, 2007 we rode from Mike's house in Oakland to Danville, up Mt Diablo (only to the junction), then down to Walnut Creek and took the BART train back to Oakland. This was our first "heat" ride of the year and it sapped us all. GPS/Heart Rate info.

59 mile training ride Jan 8, 2006 : Long Distance Training ride for the Laos Tour. We spent 8 1/2 hours riding 46 or 59 miles along the coast north of Santa Cruz on a gorgeous perfect day. Our bad luck started early: after less than a mile, Scot's tire blew up - very loudly, sending him splatting to the pavement which luckily he survived well. A few miles later Rob's crank stripped out so that he couldn't ride anymore. Luck was with him though and he got a ride back home with a friend who was passing by. Then he got a ride to catch up with us - only missing 10 miles or so. After 24 miles, we split into two groups: Grace and Seth headed back while the rest of us continued north until we had ridden 30 miles. We made it back just at dark after 8 1/2 hours of riding. It was my longest winter ride ever and a fantastic time.

Going wine-tasting at Bonny Doon Vineyard in the middle of the ride was a treat, as was visiting the famous Moon Rocks. This is one awesome ride: Rob's house up through UCSC campus fireroads to Empire Grade, up to Pine Flat, down to Bonny Doon, up to Martin, Icecream Grade, back to Empire Grade, down to Smith Grade, left on Moore Ranch Road, right on an unnamed 50 year old ex-road to Route 1.
