Nathan Hoover  > Unicycling > Foreign Trips > Laos Unicycle Tour Jan/Feb 2006
The Laos Unicycle Tour (LUT) of Jan/Feb 2006 consisted of 19 unicyclist plus a guide from Grasshopper Adventures and a local staff (guide, two drivers and two helpers). While we did have a major disaster with Ken (the unicyclist organizer) breaking his leg badly halfway through the trip, overall the tour was a great success. Even though there were only 6 riding days, those days were quite strenuous and covered nearly 500km. In addition, we had two back-to-back days where we climbed a total of 2800m.

These photos attempt to capture some of the amazing people and scenery of Laos as well as our riding experiences. I hope you like them.

Riding day statistics (GPS, heartrate, elevation etc):

Day 4, 59km
Day 6, 78km
Day 7, 95km
Day 8, 57km
Day 10, 107km
Day 11, 95km

Nathan Hoover > Once we passed through immigration we hired a second bus to take us and our baggage over the bridge and to the Nong Khai train station in Thailand.

Nathan Hoover > Hans coming out of immigration successfully with a Thailand visa
Nathan Hoover > 7:30pm. Sid drinking Chang beer on the overnight train to Bangkok. Sid won the "least preparation/least amount of problems" award. Can you believe he accomplished the whole tour without sunscreen?! And without any drugs, not even malaria pills? He also won the tan line contest.
Nathan Hoover > Rob and Mike. Rob won the Photographer's award and Mike won the most adaptable vegan award (no contest there).
Nathan Hoover > Nick and Barry. Nick certainly earns the "most improved rider" award for the tour. At age 11 it was awesome that he completed the 107km day completely on his unicycle too! By the end of the tour he was cruising happily along with 125mm cranks and not crashing.
Nathan Hoover > Two excellent Danes, Thomas and Jesper. These guys are GREAT riders. Thomas was the only one to ride the whole way (minus a couple of feet on one climb) while sick most of the time. Anyone else would've given up. Jesper did ride the whole way, no problem at all.

Training in the snow, ice, and strong winds on the flat terrain of Denmark prepared them perfectly for the Lao mountains.
Nathan Hoover > Hans and Grace
Nathan Hoover > Beau and Nathan - also rode all the way, although Nathan had to enlist the help of some Butt'r for the first time ever.
Nathan Hoover > Start of our 40 hour day: Feb 4, 2006. It started somewhere in the middle of Thailand on the train. Here, at 6:15am, Beau is having breakfast in his sleeping compartment
Nathan Hoover > 7 of us visited Dr Ken in the hospital in Bangkok. In a moment of great timing, just before Nathan, Beau and Grace had to leave for our flight, the other 4 from the train showed up. Amazingly 11 visitors fit easily in Ken's ultra-plush hospital room. Ken was cheerful and we really loved catching up with him.
Nathan Hoover > 24 real hours later, it's still Feb 4 and not even dark yet. We're winging our way from Hong Kong to San Francisco after an amazing adventure.
