Nathan Hoover  > Unicycling > Foreign Trips > Laos Unicycle Tour Jan/Feb 2006
The Laos Unicycle Tour (LUT) of Jan/Feb 2006 consisted of 19 unicyclist plus a guide from Grasshopper Adventures and a local staff (guide, two drivers and two helpers). While we did have a major disaster with Ken (the unicyclist organizer) breaking his leg badly halfway through the trip, overall the tour was a great success. Even though there were only 6 riding days, those days were quite strenuous and covered nearly 500km. In addition, we had two back-to-back days where we climbed a total of 2800m.

These photos attempt to capture some of the amazing people and scenery of Laos as well as our riding experiences. I hope you like them.

Riding day statistics (GPS, heartrate, elevation etc):

Day 4, 59km
Day 6, 78km
Day 7, 95km
Day 8, 57km
Day 10, 107km
Day 11, 95km

Nathan Hoover > Our room with mosquito nets. The showers were interesting in this guesthouse. Buckets of water heated on the stove in the kitchen. Guesthouse staff carried them to the bathroom cistern. We mixed the hot and the cold water and dumped it over ourselves using a scoop.
Nathan Hoover > Jan 29, 2006: Mike fills up on water ready to start our 95km day to Kasi before 7am. We'll climb 1000m and descend 2000m today. GPS/heart rate/elevation info
Nathan Hoover > We're traversing high up, over 1400m, and the view is grand.
Nathan Hoover > A pig on the road - We probably passed over a hundred oinkers during the tour.
Nathan Hoover > The sad part of the tour. We came around a corner and Ken was laying in the road with a broken leg. We're dressing the wound and splinting his leg under Dr Ken's calm directions
Nathan Hoover > Hans finishing up the splint made of cardboard box, duct tape, wooden sticks found on the roadside, and his sweatshirt. Ken, tough as nails, assures us he's ok.
Nathan Hoover > The carry, orchestrated by Seth (trained in Search and Rescue), to get Ken into the van for a 3 hour drive back to Luang Prabang, and then by plane to Bangkok. He had surgery 12 hours later.
