Nathan Hoover  > Unicycling > Foreign Trips > Laos Unicycle Tour Jan/Feb 2006
The Laos Unicycle Tour (LUT) of Jan/Feb 2006 consisted of 19 unicyclist plus a guide from Grasshopper Adventures and a local staff (guide, two drivers and two helpers). While we did have a major disaster with Ken (the unicyclist organizer) breaking his leg badly halfway through the trip, overall the tour was a great success. Even though there were only 6 riding days, those days were quite strenuous and covered nearly 500km. In addition, we had two back-to-back days where we climbed a total of 2800m.

These photos attempt to capture some of the amazing people and scenery of Laos as well as our riding experiences. I hope you like them.

Riding day statistics (GPS, heartrate, elevation etc):

Day 4, 59km
Day 6, 78km
Day 7, 95km
Day 8, 57km
Day 10, 107km
Day 11, 95km

Nathan Hoover > 3:30pm break: Jesper, Thomas, Beau and Rob. 4 tough guys.
Nathan Hoover > Just after 6pm, hanging out in Kasi after an amazing riding day. Icecream and Beer Lao, what could be better? Grace came in at 7pm, her way lit by the headlights of our sag wagon.
Nathan Hoover > Jan 30, 2006, 3rd riding day in a row. This time it's 58km to Vang Vieng with much less climbing. GPS/heart rate/elevation info
Nathan Hoover > 9am, Tony needs a pull up the hills due to a very sore achilles tendon. Beau is glad to oblige.
Nathan Hoover > Great scenery
Nathan Hoover > Beau at a rest stop
Nathan Hoover > The goal was to make it to Vang Vieng for lunch. Grace made it by 12:40 - very hot and very happy to be done for the day. Her unicycle caddy has just given her a can of ice cold coconut juice.
Nathan Hoover > A gecko on our wall
Nathan Hoover > 6:30pm, sunset from the balcony of our Vang Vieng guesthouse
Nathan Hoover > Jan 31, 2006: a rest day! We hike over to Tham Chang (Chang Cave) - scenery on the way
Nathan Hoover > Super clear water flowing out of the cave. After exploring the cave, we came back here and went swimming. We eventually found a way to swim underground quite far into the cliff - no pictures though.
Nathan Hoover > Women fishing in the river or collecting something (edible)
Nathan Hoover > Inside Tham Chang. There were lights and paths going in over 100m - a great cave
Nathan Hoover > Hans loving our swimming spot

To view this movie, you need to have an MPEG1-capable player like Windows Media Player or Quicktime installed. If you're having problems, double-check that you have the very latest version installed. We do not recommend Real Player, as it seems to be prone to error. If you'd like to save this movie, right-click this link and choose save as. Then you can play it at larger sizes, etc.
